Who cares about stock market booms and busts ?

چکیده
This article investigates the association between stock market activity and mental well-being, exploiting the availability of interview dates in the British Household Panel Survey to match changes in the FTSE 100 stock price index to respondents over the period 1991–2008. We present evidence that annual changes in the price index are associated with better mental well-being whilst greater uncertainty, proxied by volatility in the price index, is associated with poorer mental wellbeing—even after controlling for macroeconomic conditions. Our findings provide support of a wealth mechanism and also suggest that the stock market is a barometer of economic prospects and/or social movements and mood. JEL classifications: J26, D12

متن کاملWealth Shocks and Health Outcomes: Evidence from Stock Market Fluctuations
Do wealth shocks affect the health of the elderly in developed countries? The economic literature is sceptical about such effects which have so far only been found for poor retirees in poor countries. In this paper I show that wealth shocks also matter for the health of wealthy retirees in the US. I exploit the booms and busts in the US stock market as a natural experiment that generated consid...

A model of endogenous investment booms and busts with rational agents is presented where outside investors are uncertain about both industry (aggregate) and firm-specific capital productivity, and insiders manipulate information through strategic productivity disclosures. For intermediate and high levels of agency conflict, there are aggregate investment distortions along the equilibrium path, ...
